World Environment Day 2024 Workshop and the 3rd Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology - Solutions Opened for Online Registration.
On the morning of 5th June, on the occasion of the 53rd World Environment Day, the 2024 World Environment Day Seminar was successfully held online. Responding to the theme of "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience" of World Environment Day 2024, this event brought together knowledge, energy and ambition from various industries, including industry, academia and research, to discuss technical measures and innovative solutions to address the current challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, land desertification, and pollution control.
On behalf of the organizers, ZHAO Xiaolei, Head of ITPO Shanghai, expressed her gratitude to the experts, scholars and business representatives from various fields for their participation in the workshop. In her speech, she emphasized the important role of R&D and application of advanced green technologies for land restoration, and advocated industry-university-research cooperation to promote the flow of knowledge and technology, and to turn the challenge of climate change into new opportunities for the development of emerging industries.

Speech by ZHAO Xiaolei, Head of UNIDO ITPO Shanghai
The seminar invited representatives from various fields of "industry, academic and research" to share their insights.
INDUSTRY
WANG Junfang, Director of Mengcao Eco-Carbon Research Institute and representative of the previous leading projects in “Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology & Solutions”
, firstly shared his views. He believed that six core elements are indispensable in realizing the goal of low carbon emission in the whole process of ecological restoration, namely, "low carbon planning and design concept", "selection of plants with strong resistance and carbon sequestration capacity", "low/zero carbon project implementation process", "application of low carbon products and technologies", and "carbon neutral technology". project implementation process", "application of low-carbon product technology", "maintenance-free process" and "eco-product value accounting".

HUANG Shanfeng, Technical Director of Climate Bridge (Shanghai) Environmental Technology Co., shared her views on the topic of "Carbon Sink Potential of Agricultural Soil Management Projects". Focusing on the carbon sink potential of agricultural soil management and related project cases, she explained in depth the reasons for the shift from the early focus on industrial emission reduction to the current focus on soil management and governance in China. She believes that better utilization of international models and satellite remote sensing technologies related to soil management to solve domestic problems is a direction that can be continuously explored in the future.

ACADEMIC
LU Lingli, Associate Professor, Doctoral supervisor of Zhejiang University College of Environmental and Resource Sciences, shared the progress of "heavy metal contaminated farmland soil remediation technology". She mentioned that cadmium and other heavy metal pollution has become one of the main problems that threaten the safe production of crops in China's farmland soil, and compared with physical and chemical remediation, the use of green plant remediation technology to remove soil heavy metals is a more economical, low energy consumption of green remediation technology, through the screening and cultivation of large biomass, accumulation capacity of the "hyper-accumulation of plant" to remediate contaminated soil, not only can improve the efficiency of soil remediation, but also can improve the efficiency of soil remediation. By screening and cultivating "hyper-accumulating plants" with large biomass and strong accumulation capacity to remediate the polluted soil, it can not only improve the efficiency of soil remediation, but also save the cost and eliminate the secondary pollution.

CHEN Xuechu, Vice Dean, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of East China Normal University School of Ecological and Environmental Sciences, Director of Shanghai Key Lab for Urban Ecological Processes and Eco-Restoration (SHUES), discussed the topic of "Exploration of Land Restoration and Sustainable Utilization of Rural and Countryside Areas in Metropolitan Areas". He proposed the concept of "agroforestry-wetland composite system" and how to utilize this composite system to build "ecological countryside space". The construction of this system can significantly enhance the water purification function of agroforestry and water countryside, protect biodiversity, and promote the practice of ecological smart agriculture. Finally, he introduced the Global Land Outlook (Second Edition) report translated by East China Normal University in cooperation with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

RESEARCH
ZHENG Zhirong, Associate Researcher at the Institute of Ecology of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), discussed the topic of "Exploring Sustainable Development Paths for Desertification Control". She highlighted successful cases of innovation in desertification prevention and control in the Kubuqi Desert Ecological Demonstration Area, the Saihanba Forest Farm, the Mentougou District in Beijing and the Engebei Ecological Demonstration Area, and introduced the Northeast Asia "3+X" Environmental Cooperation Platform for Sand and Dust Storm Prevention and Control, arguing that the prevention and control of desertification requires the active cooperation of all countries.
