Overviews
The Carbon Neutrality Technology Solutions Call, which was launched by UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) Shanghai in response to the Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) initiatives in 2022, aims to support China’s dual carbon goals (peak carbon and carbon neutrality) by encouraging the application of selected solutions, promoting outstanding projects through UN platforms or international industrial awards, and fostering technological innovation and international cooperation in the industrial sector—ultimately contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Each year, UNIDO ITPO Shanghai sequentially organize the campaigns, selecting themes that align with the local and global contexts and inviting companies with innovative technologies to participate. This year, UNIDO ITPO Shanghai will host the The 5th Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology & Solutions under the theme Sharing the Blue: From Local Pier to Global Frontier.
In 2021, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) launched the Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) at the global Clean Energy Ministerial. IDDI is a global coalition composed of national governments and private sector organizations. The initiative aims to leverage large-scale government procurement power, starting from major industrial infrastructure projects, to stimulate markets for low-emission or near-zero-emission products through technological collaboration. Countries such as India, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden have joined this initiative. UNIDO firmly believes that the success of IDDI depends on the participation of more countries and broader global cooperation.

3rd Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology and Solutions
In 2024, the 3rd Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology and Solutions initiative has received numerous applications from 25 cities, with 20 leading projects selected, of which 8 have won or been nominated for the UNIDO Global Call. ITPO Shanghai has supported these projects in showcasing their innovations at high-level UN forums, such as the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum and COP28, leading to some projects securing investments in Shanghai.

In 2023, UNIDO ITPO Shanghai and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technology Innovation Center in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region inaugurated the 2nd Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology and Solutions. 14 carbon-neutral technology projects from across the country entered the final competition. After the wonderful presentation of the technical solution project teams and the unique analysis and professional interpretation review of the judges, 10 leading project awards and 4 shortlisted project awards were finally determined

On the afternoon of the July 28th, UNIDO Global Call 2022 1st Expert Consulting Meeting on Carbon-Neutral Technology was successfully held during the 4th Global Industrial Internet Conference 2022. The conference was co-hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and co-organized by UNIDO ITPO Shanghai, the School of International and Public Affairs of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, SJTU-UNIDO Joint Research Institute for Green Growth and the Carbon Neutral Development Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2025, the 4th Campaign of Carbon-Neutral Technology and Solutions initiative successfully held its project evaluation workshop, attracting participation from multiple cities and involving 12 enterprises in roadshow evaluations. UNIDO ITPO Shanghai continues to support outstanding projects in showcasing their innovations at high-level international platforms, facilitating technology and investment matchmaking, and helping Chinese green solutions gain global exposure and potential investment opportunities.
